Long-awaited Dominican East highway nears funding
Santo Domingo.- The Web site projectfinancemagazine.com reports Friday that two major foreign banks were instructed to finance the country’s Autopista del Coral road project, which would provide the missing four-lane link between the sprawling east coast resorts and the rest of the country.
It said the 70 kilometer road will connect the resorts at the Bavaro-Punta Cana area with the town La Romana, “both of which host large airports that between them account for more than half of the country’s airline flights.”
“BNP Paribas and US Ex-Im have been mandated to arrange financing for the Autopista del Coral road project in the Dominican Republic,” reports projectfinancemagazine.com.
For years the east coast hoteliers have demanded construction of the highway, arguing loss profits as local tourists shun their resorts from the dismal condition of the current two-lane road.
