Puerto Plata had long been a major tourism center for the DR, registering 20% yearly growth rates during the 1990s, but the last 8 years have seen sharp declines in the number of tourist arrivals. According to the Central Bank, the last time Puerto Plata saw a spike in the number of arrivals was in 2000 when 786,000 tourists visited. Every year since then has seen sharp annual declines, with a…

Dominican Republic: Riches in the 'poor man's Caribbean'
A stylish facelift means that the Dominican Republic now caters for more than the mass market – one reason BA has started flying there. Fred Mawer explores. The Dreams Punta Cana is an appealing place. A river-like swimming pool snakes through mature grounds planted with palms and sea grapes. To either side of the property, an untamed white-sand beach extends as far as the eye can see. Facilities for children are excellent. Let’s say you have £900 to spend on…

A taste of the tropical: The Dominican Republic revealed
Another great post from a British website: Sammy Davis Junior is a friend of mine. I met him last week in the Dominican Republic. He poured me Santo-libre cocktails while balancing on the tailgate of a fast-moving truck. Santo-libres are the rum-and-Sprite cousin of the more familiar rum-and-Coke Cuba-libre. They taste just as good. I had not expected to find Sammy Davis Junior alive, well, and extreme-bartending in the Dominican Republic, but I knew precious little about the country before…

Dominican official downplays tourism industry’s ‘eco-irresponsibility’
Santo Domingo.- To guarantee the stability of Dominican Republic’s most productive sector, the Tourism Ministry says it maintains diverse plans to promote ecotourism nationwide. Two months ago Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia signed a agreement to stimulate sustainable tourism projects with Japan’s cooperation agency JICA, said public relations director Rosanna Figueroa, in response to United Nations Program  for Development (PNUD) affirmations that the Dominican tourism model is unsustainable because it doesn’t include the protection of the natural resources. She said…

Punta Cana Princess
A description from Jan Ross from Travel Authority Blog I just spent a few days in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, visiting several different resorts with the wonderful Vacation Express folks, and the only problem I am left with after days spent enjoying the beautiful beach, lounging by gorgeous pools, and eating wonderful food is this. Which fabulous resort do I write about first? It’s quite the quandary. Each one was more spectacular than the last, with everything…

Dominican Republic-Inexhaustible!

By far the best I’ve seen so far.    I’ve seen many videos of the Dominican Republic, however, this one blows the rest out of the water.  The department of tourism truly accomplished their goal here.  It makes you want to call your airline, hop on a plane , and enjoy this paradise.  Just beautiful!
